Why Buy Gas Stove ?

In India, you can see variety of cooking options used in the kitchen. From rural tandoor where woods are used as fuel to urban modular kitchen with latest hobs using PNG pipeline. Also many people use induction cooktops. I also have “Philips Viva Collection HD4928/01 2100-Watt Induction Cooktop (Black)”. However I hardly use it now after switching from LPG to PNG. It is just the back-up option for me now. That brings me to original question which is Why Buy Gas Stove? Now why did I buy a Gas Stove? I moved to a new place and applied for new Indane gas (LPG) connection. When you buy a new Gas connection they will charge for a very basic 2 burner stove (cost: ~1500 INR) too and won’t even tell you explicitly. It is only when you will see your bill you will realise it. So I will suggest if you are buying a new connection, ask them explicitly that you do not need Stove as you already have it and deduct that amount from the bill. So I bought a new 4 burner Gas stove for my new connection. So I can say that the main reason is the fuel source in India is LPG or PNG which is not supported by induction cooktops. Secondly, electricity is costlier than PNG. So Gas Stoves are way cheaper options than induction cooktops in long run. Also you have better control over heat with Gas stove. One can very easily increase decrease Flame/heat instantly as per requirement which is not possible with induction cooktop. Also most of the Gas stoves comes with 2,3 or even 4 burners so you can cook multiple dishes in parallel. So you don’t have to think about whether induction or Gas cooktop. The answer is obviously Gas stoves are much better option for daily cooking for a family.

LPG or PNG Gas

Now LPG has been primary source for most of us in the last few decades however in the last 5 years many options are available for Gas pipeline too. I am assuming if you are reading this then either you have LPG cylinders or PNG pipeline in your kitchen. I am using IGL pipeline for cooking purpose with my Glen gas stove. Why I shifted from LPG to PNG is primarily because of 2 reasons:
1) Cost:PNG is cheaper than LPG. Now most of us have given up LPG subsidy lately and prices of LPG is every growing. If you switch to PNG you will find it way cheaper than LPG.
2) Availability: I have often faced situation where I am cooking something and mid-way I find my LPG cylinder is empty. If you have extra LPG cylinder available you will change it. I didn’t have it so I used to use my induction cooktop for cooking in emergency situation. With PNG, availability is higher.
Only disadvantage I have noticed is with LPG you can get bigger flame/heat in gas stove and PNG is slightly lesser. In other words if I have to put it then LPG is more quicker than PNG however the difference is very much negligible. Also PNG pipeline is still not available at all places. So you may have to opt for LPG cylinders in that case. Now once you have decided whether it is LPG or PNG for you , you have to pick Gas stove which supports your choice. Not all Gas Stoves supports PNG. Some may require minor modification which most of the time Gas Pipeline technician may do to use PNG. They may charge for it or may not. In my case I was not charged anything extra.

Number of burners – 2, 3 or 4

This is personal choice however I have used 2 burner stove in the past and many times my wife used to complain about it. When you have unwanted guests at home or guests arrive at very short notice period and you quickly want to cook entire meal then with 2 burners it becomes a challenging tasks. I am sure many of you can relate to it. Also many people say that for a small family 2 burner is sufficient however Gas stove is something we don’t buy often. Once you buy it you use it for decades. So if you are telling me that family won’t grow in a decade you may want to re-think about it. The problem I have seen with 3 burner stove is due to the shape (triangle mostly) you will not get sufficient space to use all 3 burners simultaneously. So if you are going to buy a 3 burner gas stove, make sure to properly check the space between 3 burners. If possible, keep 3 utensils and see if it is easy for you to use all 3 together. Now because of the above issues I went ahead and bought a 4 burner Gas stove.

Which brand shall I buy ?

Ok. So in today’s competitive market I don’t think anyone will sell crappy items. Every company is trying hard to sell good tested products. However you must consider following points:
1) What is brand image in the public? For this you can visit online stores like Amazon, Flipkart etc and read latest customer reviews about the product. Look for verified customer reviews to avoid fake ones. If people are happy with the product you can assume it should be fine for you too. Also look for Sellers rating too. Few companies directly sell it on Amazon however there are local sellers too. You may not have too much knowledge on this front. So to keep it simple, check the seller rating on Amazon. I personally prefer buying products from seller with rating around 4 or more. Anything lesser than that I am not comfortable in buying products from them especially if it is expensive product. If still one insists and I have to name few I will say Prestige , Glen & Pigeon are few leading Gas stove brands in India.

Types of Burner – Brass , Aluminium Alloy

Many buyers check for burner alloy which is preset in the gas stove. At a very high level I can say it is not that important actually. Both alloys are very good against wear and tear and are heat resistant. Both have good life. So if I talk in general then both are very good. However if specifically you want to compare Brass with Aluminium alloy burner then I will say brass is better. And obviously it is costlier too. However the cost difference is worth or not that is your call. I will not recommend to stretch your budget just to get Brass burner.

Manual or Auto Ignition

In the past we have used matchsticks or lighter to light up Gas stove. However recently auto ignition gas stove are gaining popularity. In auto ignition, you don’t need external light source. It requires battery and when you move knob to specific angle it generates spark. This in turn ignites burner. So if you need auto ignition , you may have to pay little extra and keep spare battery at home. You can also manually ignite burner if battery is down. I won’t suggest paying extra just for this feature. I am using Manual Gas stove and keep a lighter handy.

Other Considerations

Glass Top or Stainless Steel

Nowadays to compliment your modular kitchen almost all brands are selling Glass top gas stoves. These gas stoves looks elegant and are easy to clean too. Unlike stainless steel gas stoves, Glass top stoves don’t lose the shine with time. Few people do complain about shattering of glass due to high temperature. I must tell you that these are toughened glass which are suppose to bear high temperature and are much more stronger than normal glass. That being said toughened glass does not mean unbreakable glass. So you may have to use it carefully. Like it is expected that you don’t put cold water on it to clean as soon as you are done with cooking. However it is also true that nowadays most of the gas stoves sold are with glass top only. If you feel that you want to use your gas stove in rough and tough manner then I will suggest to go for stainless steel one.

Space/Dimension

Ideally this should be among the first few points after budget you want to spend. You must know the space available in kitchen slab for Gas stove. You must have proper space else buying a bigger Gas stove than available space will surely cause loads of trouble in adjusting. Also you should consider the location of gas inlet, if it is on left side or right side or rear.

Burner Size

You can also check what are the burner size available if buying a 2, 3 or 4 burner gas stove. Generally we have two small and two big burner in 4 burner stove. This is required too because not all dishes are cooked at high flame. So you don’t need all 4 big burners.

Budget

This is perhaps the most important factor which we generally don’t keep it at first place. Honestly speaking you must set your budget first. How much do you really want to spend on new gas stove ? Do you need it for permanent basis or temporary ? Are you living with family or room mates. Depending on all these factors you can set your budget. Just to give you a rough idea – a good 4 burner should not cost you more than INR 7000.

Guaranty/Warranty/Customer Service

When you buy a new Gas stove, check for guaranty, warranty & customer service available post sale. It is equally very important. Most brands shall give you 1 year warranty on gas stove and 3 years or even more warranty on burner.

Online or Offline Purchase

Why people buy anything online ? I do it because I find some very good deals/promotions online. You can find so many deals on Amazon and also various banks offer good discount/cashback if you do online shopping nowadays. So you can get multiple discounts and save good money. If I can save some money buying things online I will do it. Also online retailers especially Amazon have a very good return policy. So with the convenience of ordering products from home and getting it delivered too in 2-3 days is good enough reason for me too buy anything online. I will say you do visit nearby store and check the items and get some feel of it. And if you can get some what same price then buy the product offline else buying online is better idea.
